Ponder. Ruminate. Reflect. Process. Contemplate. Muse.

Ages and Stages

These are all words that mean a similar thing –  to think about carefully, to reflect.

I find that fall is an excellent time to reflect, especially about career and livelihood.

ponderDriving to the coast today, the turning and falling leaves reminded me about letting go and change. At some point I will want to “let go” of the active nature of my current career. Perhaps select something less demanding and more satisfying.  I’ve been in the workforce for, well, let’s just say a long time. Working towards retirement is uppermost in my thoughts. Because I’m in the latter stage of my career, I need work with a good share of balance and flexibility. I needed the same thing at the beginning of my career, but for different reasons.

Perhaps you are just starting on your path.  Or maybe you are a “seasoned” worker.  Wherever you are on your career journey, know that questions will continue throughout your career journey, but the questions are likely to change as you move forward with your life and career.  Is this a season of change for you? It might be time to reflect on where you are and where you need to go.  If so, ask yourself these questions:

What barriers are before you?

What successes lie behind you?

What do you need to let go of to be happy in your work?

Fall is a great time to reflect on your questions. Share your quest and your questions with others – if your career answers are slow in coming, meet with a career advisor. Any one of us in this group of Portland career counselors has had our share of questions we had to resolve and are happy to listen and share. In our own careers, like the brilliant leaves falling in the forest today, we have had to turn, “let go” and trust in our own processes and each other.
